Core Competency is a course designed for new firefighters to learn the basics of firefighting that includes instruction in ladders, fire behavior, hoses, SCBA, building construction, and search and rescue.
This 6 month certification firefighter program includes topics such as Fire Department Organization, Fire Behavior, Safety, SCBA, Portable Extinguishers, Ladders, Fire Hoses and Appliances covered in Module A. Topics covered in Module B are Forcible Entry, Ventilation, Water Supply, Nozzles and Fire Streams, Rescue, Fire Control, Emergency Medical Services, and Building Construction. Module C covers Ropes, Loss Control, Fire Detection, Fire Prevention, Fire Cause, Communication, Terrorism, Fire Fighter Survival, and finally HazMat Awareness.
The 40-hour Airport Firefighter Certification Course (Aircraft Rescue & Firefighting -ARFF) is a combination of academic and practical instruction. This course is designed to meet the training needs of most airport fire service organizations. The course will acquaint experienced fire fighters with basic concepts in ARFF and provide ample hands-on training. This course meets the certification requirements of NFPA 1003, Standard for Airport Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications and Federal Aviation Regulations.
Practical: Much of the hands-on portion of this course will be conducted at the Williamson County Regional Airport. In addition, students are required to participate in a live fire training exercise that will take place at Scott Air Force Base or Chicago O’Hare Airport. This location will be determined later.
State Fire Marshal “Airport Firefighter” Certification Prerequisites:
1) Certification as a Firefighter II.
2) Attainment of one year of experience in airport fire protection
3) Successful completion of the Airport Firefighter course, including the skill examination and passage of the State written examination.
